The Leonel Gómez Foundation Website was launched to enable us to bring the message of the late Leonel Gómez to a larger audience and engage a larger number of individuals in our charitable work. The Leonel Gómez Foundation was incorporated in the State of Maryland as a charitable organization and a board of Directors composed of 11 volunteers was also formed on this date. In December of 2010, the foundation received its 501c3 non-profit status from the IRS.

A Memorial was sponsored by union members of the "Sindicato de la Industria Electrica del Salvador" (SIES) to commemorate the anniversary of Monsignor Romero's death and honor the life of the late Leonel Gómez. The event was held in Santa Tecla, El Salvador, at La Divina Providencia Orphanage. During the ceremony, a painting by the artist, Mario Tevez, was unveiled picturing both Monsignor Romero and Mr. Gómez. In addition, a monument was unveiled outside La Divina Providencia Chapel commemorating the life of Leonel Gómez and a plaque to honor his life was presented to the family by Neftaly Yanes. The Poet Carolyn Forché read a poem written by her in memory of Mr. Gómez. Among the key note speakers at this event were: Joselito Acosta and Jose Santos Garcia from SIES, Father Walter Guerra of La Majada Parish, Ambassador William Walker, poet Carolyn Forché, Teresa Gómez Koudjeti. In addition, the Ballet Folclorico Salvadoreño interpreted many salvadorean dances dealing with current social issues of the country.

After the Memorial in Washington D.C., a fundraising dinner was held in the house of former White House Counsel, Greg Craig. These first donations helped launch the creation of the Leonel Gómez Foundation.

A memorial was held at the Quaker Meeting House in Washington D.C. to honor the life of Leonel Gómez. Key speakers included: Congressman Jim McGovern, D-MA; Former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador, William Walker; Poet Carolyn Forché; American University Chaplain, Joseph Eldridge and his daughter Teresa Gómez Koudjeti. After the key speakers, many of Leonel's closest friends shared their memories of him in an open forum.
